Valentine's Day in Japan

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! :)

Have you noticed that in romance shojo animes, Valentine's Day is always a highlight? The girls make a big fuss about making their Valentine's chocolate from scratch, and then get all red-faced when they give it to the guys they like. I had always wondered why anime always showed the girls giving chocolates and never the boys since in my country it's the boys who give flowers or chocolates on Valentine's Day.

When I started reading manga I found out that in Japan, Valentine's Day is an occasion where girls give chocolates to the boys. The girls even prepare two kinds of Valentine's chocolates: honmei chocolate and giri chocolate. They give honmei chocolate to the guy that they have romantic feelings for and giri chocolate, or obligatory chocolate, to guys that they don't have any romantic feelings for.

Why is that, I wonder? :)
